Schmerzen entstehen sehr häufig im Bereich der Muskulatur. Verantwortlich hierfür können sogenannte Muskel-Triggerpunkte sein. Dabei handelt es sich um Muskelfunktionsstörungen, Muskelverhärtungen mit einem speziellen Innervationsmuster. Diese Triggerpunkte sind sehr klein, schwer aufzufinden und oftmals symptomfrei, das heißt, sie selbst verursachen keine Schmerzen. Zum Problem werden sie durch ihre eigenartige „Fähigkeit“, heftige Schmerzen in andere, oftmals weit entfernte Körperbereiche zu übertragen. So können Triggerpunkte im Bereich der verspannten Nackenmuskulatur beispielsweise Schmerzen am Hinterkopf auslösen und damit den schwer behandelbaren sog. Spannungskopfschmerz hervorrufen. Trigger in der Gesäßmuskulatur sind häufig verantwortlich für „Ischias-Schmerzen“ und auch Kreuzschmerzen.
Darüber hinaus können Sehnen schmerzhafte Bewegungsstörungen auslösen. Dadurch kann bei alten Menschen die Geh- und Stehfähigkeit erheblich beeinträchtigt sein. Aber auch bei Sportlern sind derartige Störungen im Bewegungsapparat nicht selten die Ursache von Leistungsabfall und Koordinationsstörungen.
